In the end, we’re a month out from the films release and I still haven’t been hooked. Considering she’s my favourite Batgirl I’m not happy with this unfaithful interpretation of the character. However, the film interpretation has de-aged Cassandra and she appears to be a damsel rather than a warrior.

She’s the most talented fighter of the Batfamily and has the unique ability to read an opponent’s subtle face and body language to predict there next move to an uncanny degree. Bred from birth to fight and master the arts of combat. Traditionally, she’s born to the most elite assassins in the DC mythos. I’m just not sold on the idea that this character is going to be flirting with propositions of fornication with Black Mask, or that this direction is more entertaining than the source material.Ĭassandra Cain also deviates from the familiarity of the pages. He carves a tally mark for each person he kills on his own body. He believes it’s his life’s purpose to liberate people by killing them, and because he believes existence is pointless, he refers to living people as zombies. His viewpoint on life is that it’s meaningless and that killing people is the only way to bring them to salvation. He doesn’t kill to assert power and sexual gratification. I struggle to understand the storytelling purpose of this choice. Zsasz seems to be set up as a potential love interest for Black Mask. We don’t know how any character will fare until the film’s release, but these two worry me. Cassandra Cain and Victor Zsasz in particular. Part of the fun with superhero movies is that they’re visually stunning spectacles, and it’s surprising in an unfortunate way that our female-centric superhero film looks so bland in the fashion department.Īnother concern I have is the character interpretations. Black Canary has more of a style than a costume and Harley has long since abandoned her first appearance outfit, which is the only one that’s cool enough to matter. Cassandra Cain appears to have no suit, and the attire of the other two don’t matter as much to me. Huntress looks like she’s wearing literal trash bags when compared to her comic suit. The Birds of Prey movie poses as visually unique, but still contains the Snyder aesthetic of yesteryear. Aquaman & Wonder Woman 1984 embody vibrant colours and inhabit a bright world as they always should have. Even if you can’t use Barbara you’re still using Cassandra Cain and choosing not to have her as Batgirl.ĭC is rightfully moving away from the washed-out dreary look of the Snyderverse direction and vision. There is no good creative reason not to have Batgirl in this superhero film about the team she created. She’s not playing Batgirl in this movie either. Heck, Cassandra Cain is actually in this film and she took over the mantle of Batgirl from Barbara. She’s since gone back to being Batgirl, but like Black Canary and the Huntress, Barbara Gordon is the heart of the Birds of Prey. It was a way for her to continue crime-fighting, support her peers, and still make a difference. Birds of Prey saw Barbara operate under the name Oracle as the techy information broker for the team, as well as the rest of the superhero community in the DC Universe. The content replacing what we know may not be incentive enough for us to go see the film.īarbara Gordon’s tenure as Batgirl was violently ended by the Joker shooting her through the spine, thus crippling her. However, I among others who’re familiar with the source material feel B.O.P has made some questionable creative decisions.
Champions of inclusive representation have much to be excited for. Inclusion doesn’t stop with gender, as the traditionally Caucasian Black Canary is played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell, while Black Mask and Victor Zsasz are potentially in a homosexual relationship as well. Both production and on-screen plot revolves around women, as the movie’s cast, writer, director, and producers are primarily female. Traditional media trades are excited to see Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn make her triumphant return to the big screen. Buzz for the upcoming Birds of Prey movie is a bit mixed.
